The Old Library is currently undergoing a once in a lifetime redevelopment project to preserve and conserve this building and its precious collection for future generations. These precious collections have been in our care for over 400 years, but today The Library faces conservation challenges and an urgent need to improve fire protection and environmental controls. The Old Library Redevelopment project is safeguarding this magnificent 18th century building, and conserving its precious collections for future generations. The team is decanting 200,000 early printed books from the library’s shelves. One by one each book is cleaned, vacuumed, electronically tagged and linked to a catalogue record, before being safely relocated to a climate-controlled storage facility.
